Following consideration of representations and objections at its meeting on 19 January 2022, the Board of Natural England approved the confirmation of the notification of the Dearne Valley Wetlands SSSI with modifications to the description of the special interest (area figure amendment) and boundary map. Natural England consulted with owners, occupiers and interested parties on the notification of Dearne Valley Wetlands Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on 13 May 2021.

Consultations closed on 13 September 2021.

Natural England confirmed Dearne Valley Wetlands SSSI under section 28 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 on 4 February 2022.

Dearne Valley Wetlands is notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) 13 May 2021.

Dearne Valley Wetlands SSSI is an area of post-industrial urban fringe in South Yorkshire, near Barnsley, and comprises large areas of open water and associated wetland and woodland habitat within the catchment of the River Dearne. It is of special interest for its nationally important numbers and assemblages of breeding and non-breeding birds.

What happens next

We are now assessing the response to the consultation and will be making a recommendation to the Board of Natural England in due course. Natural England has to make a decision to either confirm or withdraw this notification by 12 February 2022 or the notification will cease to exist. We will widely promote Natural England's decision.
