Licensing of specialist private primate keepers in England
Overview
Defra are launching this consultation to seek your views on the introduction of a specialist private primate keeper licensing regime in England, through regulations made under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
This consultation will seek views on the proposed specialist private primate keeper licensing regime, as well as the new primate-keeping welfare standards.
Why your views matter
Your views will help to shape the final drafting of the provisions and standards.
We are seeking your views on;
- details of the licensing scheme and changes to the regulations proposed in the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill,
- proposed standards for the care and management of primates that are to be kept under a specialist primate licence.
A draft of our proposed welfare standards is attached to this consultation under 'related documents'.
What happens next
We plan to publish a report on GOV.UK summarising the feedback we have received when the consultation closes. The findings of the consultation will help us to determine and finalise the new specialist primate keeping measures and the welfare standards underpinning the new regulations.
