Consultation on UK Best Available Techniques for preventing or minimising impacts on the environment from industry

Closes 14 May 2026

Contents

This consultation seeks feedback on the UK Best Available Techniques Conclusions (BATC) for the four industrial sectors below. For efficiency, we are consulting on multiple sectors together.

  • Ferrous metals processing (forming) - Section 2
  • Ferrous metals processing (galvanizing) - Section 3
  • Textiles - Section 4
  • Common waste gas management and treatment in the chemical sector - Section 5

Completion of each section is optional, so you need only provide feedback for those relevant to yourself or your organisation. This will help us ensure that your comments are accurately captured and considered.

Before providing feedback, please review the draft BATC and interpretation guidance and supplementary information for the relevant sector(s) available here.

For each industrial sector there are:

  • Focused questions on specific techniques. These questions relate to techniques that the Technical Working Groups consider represent the most significant changes for industry to implement BAT.
  • General questions on the overall BATC. Given the length and technical complexity of the BATC documents, this section provides an opportunity to share additional comments or concerns on any aspect of the BATC.

We also welcome any technical evidence, data or cost considerations that you believe Defra needs to consider.
