Consultation on establishing UK Geographical Indications (GI) schemes after exit

Closed 1 Nov 2018

Opened 4 Oct 2018

Overview

This consultation sets out the proposals for the new UK GI schemes, which will bring the existing EU GI regulations into UK law via the Withdrawal Act. This covers the four separate GI schemes for; agri-food products, wines, aromatised wines and spirit drinks.

This mechanism for bringing the schemes into UK law will ensure that we have UK GI schemes in place from Exit day which meet our World Trade Organisation (WTO) obligations. It does not, however, allow the UK GI schemes to be changed substantially from the EU schemes. Nonetheless there are a few aspects we are able to consult on, these are:

  • arrangements for a new UK GI logo
  • new appeals process

This consultation also addresses the wider wine and spirit sector standards, which will be included in the new UK regulations.
