Consultation on the review of the Local Air Quality Management Policy Guidance

Closed 6 Jun 2022

Opened 28 Mar 2022

Overview

This consultation is being carried out to seek views on the planned revision to the statutory Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) Policy Guidance. This guidance relates to Local Authority action on air quality and applies to Local Authorities in England only (excluding those in London).

The LAQM statutory guidance sets out what local authorities should do and the legal duties with which they must comply under Part IV of the Environment Act 1995, to improve local air quality.

The guidance is being revised to reflect the legislative changes introduced through the Environment Act 2021 and clarify roles and responsibilities within local government. As part of this review, we are seeking views on the introduction of new areas for local authority consideration which reflect new research, policies and priorities in the field of local air quality, since the guidance was last published in 2016.

Why your views matter

This is an opportunity to influence and help shape the statutory guidance for local authorities in England (excluding London) on air quality.

The guidance aims to help local authorities to improve local air quality and consequently bring about an improvement in public health.

Air pollution is considered to be the biggest environmental threat to health in the UK.

What happens next

Your responses will be analysed and used to inform the finalisation of the guidance.
