We asked
Natural England consulted with owners, occupiers and interested parties on
the notification of Raisby Hill Quarry Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
on 18 October 2020.
You said
Consultations closed on 18 February 2020. No representations or objections
have been received with respect to the:
- Variation of the notification under Section 28A of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, include a revised list of operations requiring Natural England's consent; re-represent the features of special interest described in the ciation; and re-represent the statement of Natural England's views about management of the SSSI.
- Notification of additional land under Section 28B of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
- Proposed de-notification of land that is not considered to be of special interest, under Section 28D of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
We did
Natural England confirmed the additional land of Raisby Hill Quarry SSSI and
de-notified the area no longer of Special Scientific Interest on 7 April 2020.

The list of operations requiring Natural England’s consent and statement of Natural England’s views on the management of the SSSI which formed part of the notification document of 18 October 2019 remain unaltered. The other legal documents, (boundary map and the citation describing the features of special interest) has been amended only to reflect the revised area of the SSSI.

Overview
Raisby Hill Quarry was notified on 18 October 2019 and is considered to be of special interest for its nationally important geological features: Raisby Hill Quarry exposes the complete sequence of the Raisby Formation of the Upper Permian Magnesian Limestone. This site has been identified as of national importance in the Geological Conservation Review.

Why your views matter
Natural England has revised the previous notification made in 1991 and we are now seeking views on changes to the notification of Raisby Hill Quarry SSSI under Sections 28A, 28B and 28D under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, for the following:
• notification is varied under Section 28A
• notification of additional land under Section 28B
• proposed de-notification of part of Raisby Hill Quarry SSSI under Section 28D.
What happens next
We are now assessing the response to the consultation and will be making a recommendation to the Board of Natural England in due course. Natural England has to make a decision to either confirm or withdraw this notification by 17 July 2020 or the notification will cease to exist. We will widely promote Natural England's decision.
