Natural England consulted with owner, occupiers and interested parties on the notification of Cowslip Meadow Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on 13 October 2020.

No objections have been received relating to the notification of this land under Section 28 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

There have been two representations of support, from RSPB and one from Citizen Space with a further three neutral responses to the notification from the online consultation.

Overview

Cowslip Meadow is located in Luton and was notified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on 13 October 2020.

Cowslip Meadow SSSI, covering an area of 6.36 ha, is a nationally important site for its species-rich lowland meadow and population of the Nationally Rare plant great pignut Bunium bulbocastanum.

What happens next

We are now assessing the response to the consultation and will be making a recommendation to the Board of Natural England in due course. Natural England has to make a decision to either confirm or withdraw this notification by 12 July 2020 or the notification will cease to exist. We will widely promote Natural England's decision.
