Zoo Survey 1

Closed 15 Apr 2020

Opened 10 Mar 2020

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in England, in conjunction with the Scottish Government and Welsh Government, is updating the Secretary of State’s Standards of Modern Zoo Practice (SSSMZP).

The SSSMZP were last updated in 2012, and the purpose of the revisions is to bring the SSSMZP into line with modern welfare standards and to ensure that all the requirements are clear and enforceable. We want to engage zoo operators early on in the process of updating the SSSMZP.

All changes will be subject to consultation over the summer when zoo operators, local authorities, zoo inspectors and a wide range of animal welfare, veterinary and conservation organisations will be invited to comment on the changes.

Your contribution to this survey will help us understand the impact that any potential changes to the SSSMZP could have upon the zoo industry.

Please press the ‘save and come back later’ button before using the <<‘First’ navigation button and the ‘back’ button on your browser to ensure that your answers are saved.

Please do not be alarmed if the numbering of questions is not sequential, you will be routed to questions depending on your answers so may skip several questions.

There is space at the end of the survey to voice anything extra that you would like to tell us.
